How to OP Yourself on Your Minecraft Server

Learn how to give yourself operator (OP) permissions on your Minecraft server.

What are OP Permissions?

OP (Operator) permissions give you full administrative control over your Minecraft server. With OP permissions, you can use all commands, modify the world, and manage other players.

i

Important: Only the server owner should have OP permissions. Giving OP to other players gives them full control over your server.

Method 1: Using the Game Panel Console

Step 1: Access the Console

Log into your Game Panel and navigate to the Console section of your server.

Game Panel Console

Step 2: Use the OP Command

In the console, type the following command (replace "YourUsername" with your actual Minecraft username):

op YourUsername

Step 3: Verify OP Status

You should see a message confirming that you now have operator permissions. You can also use the command "op" without arguments to see all current operators.

Method 2: Using In-Game Commands

Step 1: Join Your Server

Connect to your server using your Minecraft client.

Step 2: Use the OP Command

Open the chat and type the following command:

/op YourUsername

Note: You can only use this method if you already have OP permissions or if you're the server owner.

Method 3: Using the ops.json File

Step 1: Access File Manager

Navigate to the File Manager in your Game Panel and locate the server directory.

File Manager

Step 2: Edit ops.json

Find and open the "ops.json" file. Add your Minecraft username to the operators list:

[
{
"uuid": "your-uuid-here",
"name": "YourUsername",
"level": 4,
"bypassesPlayerLimit": false
}
]

Step 3: Save and Restart

Save the file and restart your server for the changes to take effect.

Common OP Commands

Essential Admin Commands

/op [player] - Give operator permissions
/deop [player] - Remove operator permissions
/gamemode [mode] [player] - Change game mode
/tp [player] [target] - Teleport players
/give [player] [item] [amount] - Give items
/kick [player] [reason] - Kick players
/ban [player] [reason] - Ban players
/pardon [player] - Unban players

Security Best Practices

1. Limit OP Access

Only give OP permissions to trusted players who need administrative access. Consider using permission plugins for more granular control.

2. Use Permission Plugins

For larger servers, consider using plugins like LuckPerms or PermissionsEx for more advanced permission management instead of relying solely on OP.

3. Regular Permission Audits

Periodically review who has OP permissions and remove access for players who no longer need it.

Troubleshooting

OP Command Not Working

Make sure you're using the correct username (case-sensitive) and that the server is running. Check the console for any error messages.

Can't Access Console

If you can't access the Game Panel console, contact support. You may need to verify your account ownership.
