Learn what “protected” can mean, how null-routing differs from traffic mitigation, and what to verify before buying a VPS.

“DDoS protection” can refer to several different services. Network-level traffic scrubbing attempts to filter malicious traffic before it reaches your VPS. Null-routing drops traffic to a targeted IP, which can protect the wider network but also makes that server unreachable while the route is blocked. A web application firewall (WAF) helps with HTTP-layer threats, but is not a substitute for protection against every network-layer flood.
Before choosing a DDoS-protected VPS in India, ask what traffic is covered, where filtering happens, whether your IP stays reachable, what limits apply, and how incidents are communicated. Elite Hosting uses OVH network-level DDoS protection alongside its own WAF for applicable web traffic and Game DDoS protection for supported game traffic. Its VPS plans start at ₹800/month and list AMD EPYC 7313 configurations, NVMe storage, and the OVHcloud network AS16276. These layers address different traffic types, so confirm the protocols and plan coverage that apply to your service.
This guide explains the technical distinctions and gives you a due-diligence checklist. No mitigation service can promise zero impact from every attack, and actual outcomes depend on traffic type, capacity, configuration, and provider policy.
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack sends unwanted traffic from many sources toward a service or network. The aim may be to saturate a link, exhaust server resources, or overwhelm an application. The useful question is not whether a provider uses the word “protection”; it is what service remains accessible, through which layer, and under what limits.
Mitigation may be provided by the hosting network, an upstream carrier, or a specialist scrubbing provider. A provider may also use firewall rules, rate limits, or a WAF. These controls address different traffic types and operate at different points in the path. One feature should not be assumed to cover all protocols and attack sizes.
Protection is not the same as a guarantee of uptime. An SLA, if offered, has a scope, measurement method, exclusions, and remedy. Read those terms alongside the DDoS policy, rather than relying on a capacity figure or badge on a sales page.
| Response | What happens | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Network traffic scrubbing | Traffic is routed through filtering equipment; identified attack traffic is discarded and allowed traffic is forwarded. | Which protocols are covered, where scrubbing occurs, what thresholds and exclusions apply? |
| Null-route / blackhole | Traffic destined for an address or route is discarded upstream, including legitimate requests to that destination. | When is it applied, how long can it last, and how are customers notified? |
| Firewall / rate limit | Rules filter traffic that reaches a particular network or host layer. | Does filtering happen upstream, or after the VPS link is already saturated? |
| WAF / CDN proxy | HTTP(S) requests for proxied sites can be inspected and filtered at the application edge. | Which domains and ports are proxied? What about UDP, RDP, game traffic, and direct-IP access? |
Null-routing is a network-protection response, but it does not keep the affected service available. Conversely, a filtering service can still have limits and may not handle every application-layer problem. Ask providers to describe the actual customer-visible behavior rather than relying on labels like “always protected”.
Do not conduct a stress test or attack simulation against a provider without explicit written authorization. Ask for documentation, incident-policy examples, or a supported test environment instead.
Elite Hosting's protection stack combines OVH network-level DDoS protection with Elite Hosting's own WAF and Game DDoS protection. The WAF helps filter supported web application traffic, while Game DDoS protection is intended for supported game traffic; OVH's network protection adds an upstream layer. Elite Hosting's VPS lineup uses AMD EPYC 7313 configurations and NVMe storage, with Basic plan prices starting at ₹800/month. OVHcloud's network is identified by AS16276. Confirm the exact plan, protocols, ports, and mitigation coverage for your workload.
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | NVMe | Basic price/month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS-STARTER | 2 | 4 GB | 40 GB | ₹800 |
| VPS-BASIC | 4 | 8 GB | 80 GB | ₹1,600 |
| VPS-STANDARD | 6 | 16 GB | 160 GB | ₹3,200 |
| VPS-PREMIUM | 8 | 32 GB | 320 GB | ₹6,400 |
| VPS-ULTIMATE | 16 | 64 GB | 640 GB | ₹12,800 |
| VPS-ENTERPRISE | 32 | 128 GB | 1.28 TB | ₹25,600 |
OVH network-level DDoS protection, Elite Hosting's WAF, and Game DDoS protection are complementary layers, not interchangeable products. A WAF applies to supported web traffic; Game DDoS protection applies to supported game traffic; network-level mitigation addresses traffic upstream. Coverage can vary by protocol, port, plan, and attack type, so ask which layer protects each service you run and what happens during an incident.

Provider features can vary by plan, region, and traffic type. Instead of treating incomplete public documentation as proof of a provider's response, use this shortlist to ask the same questions of each vendor:
| Provider / service | What is publicly recognizable | What to confirm for your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Elite Hosting | OVH network DDoS protection, Elite Hosting WAF, and Game DDoS protection; AMD EPYC 7313 VPS lineup | Covered protocols, mitigation path, null-route policy, plan limits, incident support |
| OVHcloud | OVHcloud publishes information about its VAC anti-DDoS service | Current India product availability, VAC scope, network limits, VPS plan terms |
| Hostinger | DDoS-related features and policies may differ by product | Ask whether incidents are scrubbed or null-routed and review current network documentation |
| MilesWeb | Plans may use different locations and infrastructure | Named mitigation upstream, scope, response policy, and escalation ownership |
| Contabo | Protection and network policies should be checked against current documentation | Whether mitigation is included for the specific region and instance type |
| Vultr | Public cloud plans publish network/security information | Incident behavior, Windows license cost, region, and protocol coverage |
| DigitalOcean | Cloud firewall and platform security features are documented separately | Droplet operating system availability and mitigation response for the workload |
A WAF, malware scanner, cloud firewall, or CDN can be valuable, but each has a defined role. For example, a web proxy may help protect proxied HTTP(S) pages while leaving direct-IP services, RDP, game ports, or other protocols outside its coverage. Elite Hosting's WAF and Game DDoS protection complement OVH's network-level DDoS layer; read the product terms to understand the coverage for each service.
Mitigation is one part of availability planning. Keep application-level protections, patching, monitoring, backups, and a recovery plan in place. A protected network cannot repair a vulnerable application or recover deleted data.
What is the difference between DDoS protection and a firewall? A firewall applies traffic rules at a particular network or host layer. DDoS mitigation is intended to handle abnormal traffic volumes upstream or through a scrubbing layer. They complement each other but are not interchangeable.
Does null-routing protect my server? It can protect the wider network by dropping traffic to a targeted IP, but it also drops legitimate requests to that IP. Ask how long the route may be blocked and what alternatives exist.
Does owning an ASN prove a provider has DDoS mitigation? No. An ASN identifies an autonomous network for routing purposes. It does not by itself prove scrubbing capacity, always-on filtering, or service availability during an attack.
Can a web proxy or WAF protect my entire VPS? A proxy or WAF can protect supported web traffic for configured domains. It does not automatically proxy every protocol or direct-IP service. Check the service and port coverage for non-HTTP applications.
How does Elite Hosting layer DDoS protection? Elite Hosting uses OVH network-level DDoS protection together with its own WAF for applicable web traffic and Game DDoS protection for supported game traffic. Confirm current plan scope, protocol coverage, and incident policy before relying on a specific layer.
Does Game DDoS protection cover websites, RDP, and APIs? Not necessarily. Ask which protocols and services are included, which attacks are covered, and whether any limits or null-route conditions apply.
Can a provider guarantee that a VPS never goes offline? No service should be assumed to have zero downtime. Review the SLA, DDoS policy, maintenance terms, support process, and available service remedies.
The practical difference between DDoS services is what happens to legitimate traffic when an attack is detected. Ask whether the provider scrubs traffic or null-routes the IP, what protocols are covered, which upstreams are involved, what limits apply, and how incidents are handled. If a detail is not published, treat it as unknown and request a written answer rather than assuming the best or worst.
Elite Hosting combines OVH network-level DDoS protection with its own WAF and Game DDoS protection, alongside AMD EPYC 7313 VPS configurations, NVMe storage, and plans from ₹800/month. The layers serve different traffic types; confirm the current scope for your protocols and ports in writing. For production use, pair network protection with application security, access control, monitoring, tested backups, and a recovery plan.
